Kako Cleaning Expedition
The team altogether
In May, we went to Kako as a family and with our friend to help prepare for Kako's kids' camps. Originally, we were going to go out there to help with family camp, but the facility wasn't ready to host that many people. So, we decided that we'd still go out there and help with whatever they needed.
We flew commercially to Bethel, where Jonathan Penz and Adrian picked us up and flew us to Kako. Our plane wasn't put back together at the time, so Jeff planned to use Kako's Cherokee 6.
When we arrived, we got to see the scope of what needed to be done. This past winter, snow clogged the lodge's diesel boiler pipe. The smoke filled the entire lodge, coating everything in black soot. The smoke even found its way inside the cupboards. Some places were worse than others, but everything had to be wiped down.
And that's what we did. For a week, we scrubbed walls, shampooed the floor and wall carpets, washed dishes & toys, cleaned bathrooms, dusted books, and wiped windows. The project was quite daunting, yet through God's strength, we finished almost everything in the lodge.

On the last day we were there, Kako's food order finally arrived in Bethel (it was delivered late). Jeff and Adrian picked up the food at the airport and flew back and forth, bringing it to Camp in increments. Those of us at camp unboxed the food and organized it in the pantry.
Other than cleaning, we were able to hike the hill behind Kako on Sunday, our friend and Elliana made desserts for fun, and we also arranged a group music session.
Overall, we had a pleasant time at Kako. There's a simple pleasure in straightforward work. Please join us in praying that God would bless Kako's camp season this year, and that they'll be able to find the staff they need for this summer.
